Sudden bursts in the intensity of moderate to intense physical activity, like jogging or having sex, significantly increases the risk of heart attack, especially in people who do not get regular exercise.
Doctors have long known that physical activity can cause serious heart problems, but a recent study conducted by researchers United States helped to measure the risk, said Dr. Issa Dahabreh from Tufts Medical Center in Boston, the study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The team analyzed data from 14 studies looked at the relationship between exercise, sex and the risk of heart attack or sudden cardiac death, a deadly heart rhythm that causes the heart to stop blood flow.
Researchers found people tend to be 3.5 times more likely to get heart attacks or sudden cardiac death when they exercise than when they did not.
The men were 2.7 times more likely to get heart attacks when they have sex or as soon thereafter as compared to when they are not doing the activity. (This finding does not apply to sudden cardiac death because no studies have looked at the relationship between sex and cardiac death.)
Jessica Paul, another researcher from Tufts who also worked on this study says the risk is quite high as shown by the study. However brief period of increased risk.
"The risk is high only for a short period (1 to 2 hours) during and after physical or sexual activity," said Paul as reported by Reuters on Tuesday (22 / 3).
Therefore, the risk to individuals over a period of one year is still quite small, he said.
"If you take 10,000 people, each session of physical or sexual activity per week from each individual can be associated with an increase of 1 to 2 cases of heart attack or sudden cardiac deaths per year," said Paul.
He said it is important to balance these findings with other studies showing that regular physical activity reduces the risk of heart attacks and sudden cardiac death by 30 percent.
"We do not want the public to avoid physical activity and thought the sport was bad for health," said Paul.
